This fire ran through country I know, up the hill from my Mum’s down to the highway.
We watched on the Emergency Victoria app, as we are accustomed to now every Summer. Watched it move across that map, through that forest, and destroy those properties. 
In the weeks after, I took the boys to the edge of the forest in the pouring rain, and they rode their bikes along the trail and I grieved for the damage, but marveled at the beauty and the re-growth. Black charcoal stumps punctuated a carpet of intensely bright green seedlings, a contrast of light and shade, old and new, life after death.
