Public Artwork Sculpture - Olinda Playspace
The sculptures are in, the landscaping’s done, and on Friday 19 July 2019 the fences came down! I can't quite believe how many people are visiting every day - what a delight! The new Olinda Playspace sits on top of the hill at the old Olinda Golf Course, with views to Silvan dam in the valley below and the hills of the Yarra Ranges beyond.
Three two metre high discs sit in the landscape, as if emerging out of the ground like the hills in the distance. The colours and patterns are site specific, with the six panels etched into aluminium, expertly made by the team at Lump Studio. Special thanks must go to Chris Vassallo and his incredible team for allowing me to paint on site at their factory in Fairfield. I also want to thank Anna O’Sullivan and Mark Frisby from Frisby Fitzgerald Landscape Architects, who gave me the creative freedom to experiment with a new medium and trusted me. They have designed an amazing space - not just sand, rocks, water, slides and swings, but included art as well.
This is phase one of the Olinda Precinct Plan at the old Olinda Golf Course. Commissioned by Victoria State Government, Parks Victoria, Yarra Ranges Council, and , with the site built and managed by Exterior Concept Landscapes.
I would like to acknowledge that this artwork sits on traditional Wurundjeri land and pay my respect to the elders both past and present.
